The You Tube Birthyear meme
Apr. 3rd, 2008 11:49 pmSimple: Go to youtube.com do a search for the year you were born and check out the most excellebnt videos made from that year.
1972 Ca-p0wns them ALL. My proof are the links below:
1.) Hawkwind, "Silver Machine"
Dig the trippy psychedelic flute.
2.) Led Zep "Immigrant Song"
Okay, so it's one of those composite videos. Still the jam is there so sweet.
3.) King Crimson, "Lark's Tounge in Aspic, Part 1"
Atonal, free-form futzing turning into proto-metal-jazz fusion/be-bop and back again. (FYI: Parts 2,3,4 are less free form, each subsequent part taking on a theme from the previous part)
4.) David Bowie "Five Years" This take form the Old Grey Whistle Test. The real storyhere though is the comments of Nickelback fans freaking out. A fine perfromance worth waiting for... waiting for the video to stream that is. Bowie is folkie after all.
5.) Stevie Wonder rocks the Old School Sesame Street with a song that, with all due and every respect to the great Joe Raposo, should have been the theme for the show.
6.) 17-year-old Olga Korbut on the uneven bars at the Olympics that year. An amazing, gasp-worthy performance even 36 years on.
7.) Weather Report "Waterfall" More fusion. Some people can't take all that blatting and clangiing about. i don't mind it, actually.
Thwere's so much more. I await your comments.

POW! The future of rock and roll!
Apr. 3rd, 2008 02:23 pmHere it is. The day has arrived. Apple Inc.'s iTunes Music Store (iTMS) is now the #1 music retailer in the USA.
Keep in mind: iTMS is a digital download-only music retailer. No physical product ever exchanged hands.
Remember when the RIAA had to be dragged kicking and screaming into the viability of music being sent electronically? Remember how they have said that there is no way any artist -- signed or unsigned -- will have the ability to reach the people via the internet? Now maybe this will shut them up.
Also of note, through the right channels (like CDBaby and the like), independent and unsigned artists also have their music distro'd through iTMS also, thus making it completely possible for Lisa Loeb's challenge* to happen again.
The next years in music distribution will be interesting indeed.
* Lisa Loeb's breakthrough hit "Stay (I Missed You)" is the first and so far only single to reach the BIllboard #1 pop chart without a record label.

a political proposal
Mar. 26th, 2008 11:19 amI am absolutely appalled and disgusted to find out that presidential candidate, Hillary Rodham Clinton is actually breathing the same air as white supremist David Duke. Just this fact alone would convince anyone to suspend support of her completely unless she repudiates and distances herself from David Duke completely. Why? Because although she didn't choose to be born, she can choose to breathe.
I urge Ms. Clinton to stop breathing right now. If she does not, then Ms. Clinton chooses to side with hate and the tactics of terror and evil.

Obama in Medford
Mar. 24th, 2008 12:53 pmAnd everything having to do about it here at this link (opens new window).
The page stars a video of the speech he gave here.
BTW: the red-head has a connection to Obama. Her father helped bring Barack Obama Sr. to the US.
Don't read the comments/discussions though. There is that phrase about resonable people truing into lunkheads when given a web audience. Trust me on this. Let them live in their own fantasy world.
Just so you know, I did not get tickets; those ran out faster than the tixs for Tool/King Crimson. (That's right. Less than a minute) The covereage was more than enough, especially the fact that he walked down the most dangerous street in town to get to the gig. Ballsy.

A tale of caution
Mar. 17th, 2008 07:16 pmIt wasn't too far ago
long on the field s of the rolling hills
that the brothers and the sisters dined and danced
and drank merrily
to celebrate every-little thing that passed
there was music and dancing and
all the while one such person chimed in
"I don't like this at all!
We're too happy! We need something serious around here."
and thus it was
that the people gather'd round and told stories
of woe and fierce
battle
where everyone who was good won most of the time
and the bad guys got away every once in a while
and there were memorials for the long dead
whose living relatives have keened long and loud
to commemorate their passing
and it was such for a thousand years
or so they say
and once again another voice chimed" We have lost our balance
give us times of sadness yes, but let us be happy and merry,
cheer for our lives once more
let the wine flow! Let the dancing begin again
And so it was
as it was in the beginning.
And again there was another who cried for crying
and it would-be that way again
and thus back and forth
never to have correct balance in the world where they all lived and drank
and made love and sang and bore children
begat begetting.
and the time came to solidify the customs and
there was disagreement and dissension
no on e knew what was to be true and what was legend,
no one even seemed to care
And one fought while another fought the first.
other took up the example and did the same as the first two
and there was war and in fighting and biting of the backs
eventually
there was much calm and leaving everyone alone when there was the answer being that there will be a designated time and place for everything
and there was a party here a celebration there and a memorial there
all those days littered and posted throughout the calendar wall
and there was an agreement
and the people began to observe their holidays, but then again, who was the celebrant and the merry and who was the sad.
How was the observance to be looked at?
and there again was the fighting and the biting of the backs and the
rumbling of fists against flesh not in passion but in war.
one never known the other and the fighting continued on and on until the sun came from underground
meanwhile along on a hill the man with the mitre standing perfectly still
saying a discreet prayer to himself, and then crossing himself smiles.
ambling down the hill, shepard's staff in hand --
"Convincing the natives," he thought, "will be easy."
and this is why we drink.

From the land of WTF?
Jan. 28th, 2008 11:06 pmGreetings from the land of WTF! I bring you great tidings of the "Whaaa?"
First: The snowfall promised happened in the form of rising temperatures and melting snow. Tomorrow we are to get rain and then freezing temps. Have fun driving!
Two: Mercury goes whacko until 18 Feb. From Astro Weather:
So keep your cool, don't make no waves and plan ahead. Good advice.
Three: Apparently. a severe case of The Stupid has migrated to the Great White North. To wit: The people who run Miss Toronto Tourism kick the current Miss Canada Plus out of the judges' booth because she's a Witch, reads tarot card and does Reiki and Yoga.
And yes, they cite the oft-poorly-translated section of Leviticus that also mentions the evils of shellfish. Even though the Miss Toronto Tourism is a private organization not associated with the City of Toronto, I expect a very public legal battle to ensue. I'm sure many of my Christian friends are shaking their heads in collective WTF with the rest of the sensible world.
Four: I'm not mentioning a single word about W's State of the Union speech. I'm just happy that it's his last.
And now for something cheery! Led Zeppelin Guitarist Wants World Tour
Remember folks... no matter what, the glass is half full.
Thanks to

Two: Mercury goes whacko until 18 Feb. From Astro Weather:
Mercury has rulership of communication and transportation. This covers just about everything in one way or another. When Mercury is retrograde all things having to do with communication and transportation are prone to snafu and breakdown. You will notice during Mercury retros that the incidence of traffic light malfunctions, telephone service interruptions, lost and mishandled messages, general misunderstanding of information, missed connections and other problems in travel, and every other imaginable kind of trouble in these areas rises dramatically.
So keep your cool, don't make no waves and plan ahead. Good advice.

"We just got her bio a week ago and we don't agree with it," said Karen Murray, Miss Toronto Tourism pageant director. "We want someone down to earth, not someone into the dark side or the occult."
"We need a judge who has an upright reputation and we would be proud to introduce to the audience," noted a Jan. 24 letter to the Miss Canada Plus group from Murray and another official with the Miss Toronto Tourism pageant.
"Our board of directors has eliminated her as a judge as tarot card reading and reiki are the occult and is not acceptable by God, Jews, Muslims or Christians. Tarot card reading is witchcraft and is used by witches, spiritists [sic] and mediums to consult the dark world."

We're adrift in the land of the free
Jan. 17th, 2008 04:04 pmFirst of all happy birthday to all Capricorn folks, particularly:
dirtymouth
lunasoleil,
rowan_ashe,
catphile,
agaperos77,
solis93, and
kingfox. I promised myself that I would get back in to the time-honoured habit of sending birthday wishes to those on their birthdays, but no such luck yet. It's like I have a social life or something.
Next. as far as I'nm concerned, the big news at the Macworld "New Toys" keynote was not the MacBook Air or more disk space on the iPhone/iTouch, but that the musical guest was Randy Newman, playing hisw new song, "A Few Words in Defense of Our Country", uncensored. Brilliant.

And now for the final film for the day. You had dinner? Great! All mellow and chilled out? Fantastic! Here's something to keep you bouncing while you get ready for night-night...
Ament Productions explain it a little better than I can.
And with that I wish you all a good night. And Peace on Earth to All. Now. If you want it.

Ament Productions explain it a little better than I can.
In 1954, the UPA studio brought "Frosty" to life in a three-minute animated short which appeared regularly on WGN-TV. This production included a bouncy, jazzy version of the song. It has been a perennial WGN-TV Christmas classic, and was most recently broadcast on December 24 and 25, 2005, and again in 2006, as part of a WGN-TV children's programming retrospective, along with their two other short Christmas classics, "Suzy Snowflake" and "Hardrock, Coco and Joe".
And with that I wish you all a good night. And Peace on Earth to All. Now. If you want it.
Support a charity that helps entertainment techs (the people who risk their lives working backstage) and see my old friend Patrick Hudson show off for charity.
From ESTA/BTS:
OK. Now that you know who they are, here's the deal. For the past eleven years, Patrick created and stills runs the website Back Stage Jobs which posts entertainment tech jobs for entertainment techs to apply for. It's a helluva a resource if you ask me.
As far as the ESTA goes, well... Patrick explains it best, so I'll let the cut/paste-without-permission-please-don't-sue tell the tale. Don't worry, I won't get all Fox News on ya:
Just on principle alone, supporting Behind the Scenes is a wonderful idea. But think about it. Wouldn't you like to have a svelte redhead greet your homepage every morning?
Here's the sites again for those who are on info overload:
ESTA Foundation: http://www.estafoundation.org/bts.htm
Back Stage Jobs: http://backstagejobs.com/
BSJ Blog: http://blog.thecontactsheets.com/
And now, more drum beats to modify.
From ESTA/BTS:
Behind the Scenes provides financial support to entertainment technology industry professionals when they are ill or injured. Individuals and organizations contribute money to the program, and Behind the Scenes provides grants for emergency situations. With this initiative, our industry can make sure our colleagues are cared for when tragedy strikes.

First: ESTA Foundation’s Behind the Scenes fund was issued a $50,000 challenge grant in October from ETC. The ESTA Foundation managed to raise close to $40,000 at LDI, but that still leaves $10,000 to go to meet the challenge by Dec. 31st, 2007. ETC will match every dollar raised by Dec. 31st up to $50,000. This means any donation you give to Behind the Scenes will go twice as far to help fellow theatre professionals in their time of need
[...]
To assist in meeting ETC’s challenge, BackstageJobs.com will give away BackstageJobs.com mailing list subscriptions to anyone who donates at least $10.00 to Behind the Scenes between now, December 8th, 2007, and December 31, 2007.
[...]
If BackstageJobs.com users donate a total of at least $1000 to Behind the Scenes by December 31, 2007, I will have myself photographed naked, and post the best photo (don’t worry, it will be appropriately censored for public viewing). How’s that for incentive!.

Nov. 29th, 2007 06:25 pmA third of y'all voted for "What Holiday Tune I Should Do?" The poll is still open. Go and tip the balance.
As of yesterday, many suggested a new song. Today the suggestion is to do a reggae version of "Good King Wenceslaus" I am waiting to make this official.
The result will be posted on my MySpace page and available for free download. Once I know what should you want me to do, I'll be happy to regale you all with the musical result.
